It’s a lighter NBA night Wednesday with only eight games on the slate, but the bad defenses are out so it could be a high-scoring DFS affair. Cleveland’s defense is still reeling, and the Cavs are on a back to back and just lost Kevin Love. The Magic are on a back to back too and face the Lakers in Vegas’s highest over/under line of the day. And one superstar has a marquee matchup. We’re riding Joel Embiid Wednesday night and building a team around him.
C Joel Embiid PHI $10.4K vs Brooklyn
Embiid is the only player other than LeBron James that costs more than $10K on Wednesday, but he’s worth the investment playing the league’s worst defense against centers. Embiid hasn’t played since Sunday, so he’ll be rested and ready, and he’s averaging a massive 24/11/3 over his last seven games with 45.6 fpg during that stretch. He could hit 50 Wednesday night.
PG Dennis Smith Jr DAL $6.8K vs Phoenix
Smith has taken a rookie leap in January after a slow start. He’s scoring 17 points a game with six assists, three boards, and a steal and a half, and he’s coming off a career-best 10 assists against the Heat. Smith isn’t efficient yet, but that doesn’t matter in DFS. Phoenix is a dream matchup in what should be a face-paced high-scoring game.
SG/SF Brandon Ingram LAL $6.3K vs Orlando
You’ll definitely want at least one Laker against the Magic, who are playing on a back to back after an always exhausting game against the Rockets. Ingram has scored 78 fantasy points the last two games, so it’s worth riding the hot hand, especially since the already bad Magic defense may likely be missing Aaron Gordon.
SG/SF Josh Richardson MIA $6.2K vs Cleveland
Zach Lowe says Josh Richardson is the best player on the Heat, and any team’s best player on $6.2K against the league’s laziest defense is a smart play. Cleveland was bad against the Pistons last night and now plays a back-to-back against a high energy Miami team. Richardson has scored between 26 and 35 fantasy points in nine of his last ten and his secondary numbers like blocks, steals, and assists could carry the day here.
PF/C Bobby Portis CHI $5.9K vs Portland
The Bulls are missing Lauri Markkanen and may likely be without Nikola Mirotic, who is listed as questionable and could sit amidst trade talks. That means more playing time for Bobby Portis. Portis has played 25+ minutes seven times this season. He averages 19/9/2 in those games and gets to play against a Blazers team that has been pretty generous to opposing big men. He’s a huge bargain if Mirotic does sit out.
SF/PF Taurean Prince ATL $5K vs Charlotte
Prince is a wildcard, and that’s what you’re looking for on a cheap utility player to balance out an expensive pick like Joel Embiid. Six of Prince’s last 10 games have been terrible fantasy games of under 12 points, but he’s also had three with 28+ in that stretch. Prince just scored 21 against Charlotte on Friday, and the Hornets are worst in the league against forwards so another big game could be in store……
PF/C Dirk Nowitzki DAL $4.7K vs Phoenix
Old man Dirk is still getting the job done, with an efficient 17 points and eight rebounds per 36 minutes, and he’s shooting and making more threes than ever. The Suns don’t have any big men fit to chase Dirk around the perimeter, so maybe we’ll get a throwback game and a heap of German points.
PG/SG Shabazz Napier POR $4.5K vs Chicago
Napier has broken out this year, hitting 41% of his threes and a career-best-by-far 60% of his shots at the rim. He’ll only get his usual backup minutes against the Bulls, but it’s never a bad idea to play a point guard against the terrible Bulls defense, especially while Dunn is out. Napier is a gamble, but he has big game potential for a bargain bin price.
